Infographic on what to do when you receive a privacy breach notification. Description follows.

What to do you if you receive a privacy breach notification

Over the last few years, we have seen numerous high-profile data breaches involving the personal information of Canadians. Compromised data may damage an individual’s reputation or financial standing – and unfortunately, it can happen to anyone.

Businesses holding your personal information must notify you if a privacy breach occurs. They should:

  • Contact you as soon as possible
  • Notify you by email, phone or another appropriate form of communication
  • Provide easy-to-understand information

What to do if you receive a notification:

  • Read the notice carefully
  • Keep the notification in a safe place
  • Change your password
  • Monitor your accounts
  • Consider subscribing to credit alerts or ordering a credit report

If you have question or concerns:

  • Contact the organization involved
  • Stay vigilant as fraudsters may wait before trying to steal your information
