What to do you if you receive a privacy breach notification
Over the last few years, we have seen numerous high-profile data breaches involving the personal information of Canadians. Compromised data may damage an individual’s reputation or financial standing – and unfortunately, it can happen to anyone.
Businesses holding your personal information must notify you if a privacy breach occurs. They should:
- Contact you as soon as possible
- Notify you by email, phone or another appropriate form of communication
- Provide easy-to-understand information
What to do if you receive a notification:
- Read the notice carefully
- Keep the notification in a safe place
- Change your password
- Monitor your accounts
- Consider subscribing to credit alerts or ordering a credit report
If you have question or concerns:
- Contact the organization involved
- Stay vigilant as fraudsters may wait before trying to steal your information
