Overview of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada

Mandate and Mission

  • The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) was established in 1983, with the passage of the Privacy Act. The mandate of the OPC is to oversee compliance with the Privacy Act and, since 2001, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
  • The mission of the OPC is to protect and promote individuals’ privacy rights.
  • The Commissioner can investigate complaints, conduct audits, pursue court action and publicly report on organizations’ privacy practices. The OPC supports research examining, and promotes public awareness of, important privacy issues.

Office Locations

  • The OPC has its headquarters in the National Capital Region at 30 Rue Victoria in Gatineau, QC, occupying the 8th floor and part of the 7th floor.
  • The OPC also maintains an office in Toronto, occupied by employees of the Business Advisory Directorate.
