GATINEAU, QC, March 1, 2018 - Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien today issued the following statement regarding the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics’ report, Towards Privacy by design: Review of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act:
I would like to offer my thanks to the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics for its important study on Canada’s federal private sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
We were very pleased to see that the Committee has concluded there is a demonstrated need to grant our Office additional enforcement powers and took seriously our concerns related to consent and reputation. We also welcome the Committee's recommendations around minors in terms of consent, de-indexing and erasure.
Both PIPEDA and the federal public sector privacy law, the Privacy Act, urgently require amendment to ensure they adequately protect the privacy rights of Canadians.
We look forward to working with the government to take steps to modernize both laws as quickly as possible.
