Privacy Commissioner investigation into complaint about social media platform X

February 27, 2025 – Gatineau, Quebec

Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne has opened an investigation into social media platform X this week, following the receipt of a complaint.

The investigation, as required by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), will examine whether X is meeting its obligations under the Act.

The investigation will focus on the platform’s compliance with federal privacy law with respect to its collection, use, and disclosure of Canadians’ personal information to train artificial intelligence models.

As the matter involves an active investigation, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is not in a position to provide further details at this time.
