Privacy Commissioner tables in Parliament review of FINTRAC’s information handling practices
December 5, 2024 – Gatineau, Quebec
The Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne has completed his biennial review of the measures taken by the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) to protect the personal information that it receives or collects under the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act.
In a report tabled in Parliament today, Commissioner Dufresne notes that FINTRAC has made progress in addressing his Office’s previous recommendations, including implementing measures to avoid the unnecessary collection of personal information.
The review also concluded that FINTRAC should take further steps to ensure that it appropriately disposes of certain information holdings that do not meet reporting thresholds under the Act and improve the protection of its personal information holdings through measures such as enhanced monitoring.
FINTRAC has accepted the recommendations set out in the report.
