Privacy Commissioner launches investigation into Ticketmaster breach

GATINEAU, QC, July 31, 2024 - The Privacy Commissioner of Canada has launched an investigation into Ticketmaster Canada following a cybersecurity incident that impacted the personal information of millions of individuals worldwide.

Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation Entertainment Inc., is a U.S.-based ticket sales and distribution company with operations in Canada.

The investigation was launched in response to a complaint and will assess Ticketmaster’s compliance with the federal private-sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). It will examine the company’s practices with respect to security safeguards and whether the company complied with breach notification requirements.

As the matter involves an active investigation, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is not in a position to provide further details at this time.

Quote from Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne:

“Data breaches have surged over the last decade, and we have seen a significant increase in the scale and complexity of these incidents. Ticketmaster holds the personal information of millions of Canadians. The investigation will allow us to understand why this cyber incident happened and what must be done to address this situation and prevent it from happening again.”
