New Privacy and Human Rights Award celebrates leadership in privacy and other fundamental rights worldwide

June 18, 2024

The Global Privacy Assembly (GPA), in collaboration with the global human rights organization Access Now, has launched a new award to celebrate the exemplary contributions of organizations working at the intersection of privacy, data protection, and human rights.

The Privacy and Human Rights Award was developed by the GPA’s Data Protection and Other Rights and Freedoms Working Group, which is chaired by Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne.

“The new award will provide an opportunity to celebrate the important work that is being done by organizations around the world to advance and support efforts to protect and promote the fundamental right to privacy,” said Commissioner Dufresne. “I encourage individuals and organizations to nominate candidates who have made a significant contribution in the fields of privacy, data protection, and other fundamental rights.”

The award will recognize organizations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership or initiative at the state, regional, or international level in the fields of privacy or data protection as well as other fundamental rights.

To be eligible, organizations must have demonstrated leadership, for example, through:

  • The development of a new initiative or project which sheds light on the relationship between privacy and other fundamental rights.
  • The delivery of advocacy work at the state or regional level to highlight privacy-related issues in connection with the expression of other fundamental rights.
  • The development of new tools or resources to assist communities with understanding their privacy rights in relation to other fundamental rights.
  • The undertaking of research and reporting of exceptional quality and depth that focuses on the intersection of privacy, data protection and other fundamental rights.

Nominations for the award are now open. The recipient of the inaugural Privacy and Human Rights Award will be announced in February 2025 at Access Now’s RightsCon summit in Taiwan.
