OPC signs agreement to promote cross-border cooperation on combatting unsolicited communications and scams

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with a goal of promoting cross-border cooperation to combat unsolicited communications, including spam, scams and telemarketing.

The MOU has also been signed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and regulatory agencies from Australia, South Korea, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

All of these public authorities are members of the Unsolicited Communications Enforcement Network (UCENet, formerly the London Action Plan), and were already working, through UCENet’s Intelligence and Cooperation Working Group, to develop coordinated approaches to addressing unlawful electronic communications.

The MOU is aimed at encouraging a framework to facilitate cross-jurisdictional cooperation, international strategic and operational engagement, as well as information-sharing between members.
