Data protection authorities around the globe participate in annual Privacy Sweep

Privacy enforcement authorities from around the world are participating in the sixth annual international Privacy Sweep.

The Sweep is an initiative of the Global Privacy Enforcement Network. The theme for the 2018 Privacy Sweep is “Privacy Accountability.” Accountability has become recognized globally as a key principle of data protection, and has been incorporated into many laws, regulations, and industry guidance, including Canada’s federal private sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

When it is well implemented, accountability promotes trust and confidence on the part of consumers, enhancing competitive and reputational advantages for organizations.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada will be participating in this proactive compliance exercise by contacting tourism-related organizations to learn more about this industry’s privacy practices and implementation of privacy accountability into their internal programs and policies.

The travel industry was chosen because it collects personal information, including sensitive information and information with a marketable value.

The goal of the international Sweep is to increase public and business awareness of privacy rights and responsibilities, encourage compliance with privacy legislation, identify concerns that may be addressed through targeted education or enforcement and enhance cooperation among privacy enforcement authorities.
