Commissioner says legislative reform and additional resources needed to better regulate data giants

On May 29, 2018, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Daniel Therrien, sent a letter to the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics to provide information requested during his appearance before the Committee for the 2018-19 Main Estimates on May 1, 2018.

In the letter, he discussed additional measures and resources that would help his Office address the many challenges posed by companies that handle, and profit from, massive amounts of personal information. He also  provided clarification of the fines that will apply to organizations that contravene the new breach provisions in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act that will come into effect November 1, 2018.
