Privacy Commissioner opens investigation into Loblaw

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has reached out to Loblaw following media reports about authentication practices related to the issuing of bread price-fixing gift cards. In the meantime, we have received numerous inquiries to our Information Centre and through our Twitter feed. In the wake of a formal complaint to our Office, we have now opened an investigation.

Due to confidentiality provisions in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Canada’s federal private sector privacy law, we cannot provide additional details at this time.

For more information on what happens when a complaint is filed, see our Guide to the PIPEDA complaint process.

Individuals have a right to make a formal complaint to the OPC, but do not need to do so in order to initiate a full investigation as there is already one underway. If affected individuals would like to share comments or information regarding this incident, they can do so via our Privacy comment form. This can be done anonymously.
