Summary

The researchers conducted a situational analysis of the sense of security in second-stage housing (MH2) and of digital privacy needs. The findings: MH2s and their residents consider digital privacy to be very important. This concern arises from actual incidents that the women have witnessed.

The situational analysis also emphasizes the importance of making digital services providers aware of the need for increased privacy in the context of spousal violence. The researchers and MH2s identify this outreach as a concrete way to help providers adapt their services to the reality of women who experience spousal violence.

The researchers also interviewed providers, analyzed privacy policies and conducted a literature review to understand providers’ level of awareness. The research concludes that awareness is still not widespread and is poorly documented. Something positive, though: women customers may receive more tailored support from providers that make structural changes (e.g., team training, resource people or services, specific procedures).

The research concludes that the adaptation of providers’ privacy practices, along with the uptake of key concepts by MH2 workers, residents and the general public, is a complementary step that helps reduce the risks of privacy incidents related to digital services.

As a result, the researchers share a number of tools: workshops for MH2s, report presenting the needs study and recommendations to providers, practical information sheets, and short video capsules for the general public.
