Summary

Privacy, AI, and Machine Learning Through a Rural, Remote, and Indigenous Lens - A Resource and Toolkit is a knowledge translation project focused on a national-level privacy-related, public education and awareness raising initiative. The project explores privacy and digital safety risks associated with AI and machine learning through a rural, remote and Indigenous lens to produce a toolkit that supports assessing and mitigating privacy risks, barriers, and inequalities.

In collaboration with The Institute for Cybersecurity and Resilient Systems at Ontario Tech University and Dr. Rajen Akalu, Co-Principal Investigator on the OPC funded research project Artificial intelligence, machine learning and privacy: From threats to solutions, this project has produced education curricula for teachers to use with students. The resource is formatted for hardcopy and digital use and acts as a toolkit for educators to use in better supporting learners in diverse communities to make informed, privacy-sensitive choices.

Remote and Indigenous communities often face the most significant barriers to participation in Canadian society, especially in the digital context. Developing digital resources with under-served communities in mind fosters equitable opportunities for community members to understand, participate and engage safely in the digital world and digital economy. This project provides an opportunity for remote and Indigenous community members to add lived and experienced evidence to the digital privacy conversation. It features diverse perspectives and understandings in relation to online privacy and digital safety.
