Summary

The purpose of this project is to translate into French the script of the documentary “Data Mining the Deceased: Ancestry and the Business of Family.”

“Data Mining the Deceased” explores the industry behind the exponential growth of genealogy, and its potential impact on privacy. The documentary had its world premiere broadcast on TV Ontario (TVO)—the public broadcaster of Ontario—in 2017 and was shown a number of additional times on the station and its website. The documentary is also receiving considerable attention internationally; it has been shown at film festivals in North American and Europe, as well as by broadcasters abroad.

The original version of the documentary, produced in English, was funded in part by the OPC Contributions Program. Under the 2016-17 project, the script was translated into French as a first step towards producing a French version of the documentary, which would expand its Canadian and international audience.
