Summary

This project consisted of recruiting and training 10 volunteers to conduct privacy education workshops for the ethnocultural Francophone community in Toronto. The volunteers were trained by three experts in legal and social research from the Centre international de recherches d’experts consultants juridiques indépendants (CIRECJI), who had first done research and collected information on privacy protection from the Web site of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and various legal sources.

Following their training, the volunteers spent two months in the ethnocultural Francophone community in Toronto, where awareness of privacy and personal information protection issues was limited. Under the guidance of their trainers, the volunteers gave a series of workshops on protecting personal information.

The project’s objectives were largely achieved: the community now has a group of volunteers who can continue to raise awareness about protecting personal information; more people know their rights as enshrined in law; and privacy awareness is higher in the community.
