Commissioner appears before parliamentary committee examining the government’s collection and use of cellphone data for public health purposes

February 7, 2022

Today, Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien appeared before House of Commons Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics to talk about its study of the collection and use of mobility data.

His remarks addressed three key issues: the application of privacy principles to the use of data for public health purposes; interactions between the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada; the use of de-identified data by the public and private sectors, and the need for law reform to govern such use.
